Of course, we still have exceptions and most of the artists still keep one or two releases with only one verse or even no lyrics at all. But it's been a while that the lyrics are turning into a tendency and we can even feel that is almost sounding like pop sometimes. So let's see why this is happening.
Having in mind that streaming services like Spotify have more than 50% of " the way people listen to music these days", being even called sometimes "the new radio", we, the artists have to pay more attention to how we release our songs now, when it's much more than just " The Original Mix", "Extended" or "The Radio Edit". People don't have to listen to your song and if in the first seconds you don't catch their attention, even the biggest artists will get their song skipped to the next one. It's like a library, and people use it 24/7, at work, at school, at traffic, going to parties, at the shower... There are even playlists working as mood sifters, basically as everything you need. So why will people listen to your song specifically?
Are you sure that your song can reach people in the firsts seconds? Are you sure you communicate what you want to tell with that song well enough so people will play it again at any time of the day?
Well, songwriting is really helpful in those situations, when you have a lyric combined with the right interpretation, it can be groundbreaking. People will not only listen to it but they will want to know the artist behind it, what he felt, and for sure they will sing along it in the performance. It's not easy as that, but it's simple than it seems. What I am trying to say is that your art is what you want to say, but if you want people to hear it, if you want a career, you have to pay more attention to how your song will reach those people.
There are also some tips that are really helpful like using a catchy melody or the vocals in the first 3 seconds of the song, so as soon as people hear it they will have more chance to stay and listen then to skip in the first seconds. Know how to create a song that people can listen at any time, calm down Djs! I'm not saying that this should be the same version that you guys will play at the performance, leave that to your remix. And Remix should be the meaning of possibilities, not only musical possibilities but also a business possibility. Invite other artists to do a remix of your song, ask to do a remix of their song, exchange relevance and you'll get more exposure.
For me, music is the real meaning of possibilities, so don't create limits to yourself, you are a producer, a singer, songwriter or a Dj, you should enjoy making music and the business of it.
Say something with your art.
